I Love Those Cubs!
Now, please...
Don’t freak out.
Don’t remind me that the Cubs haven’t seen World Series action since 1945...and they lost!
Don’t rub it in my face that they haven’t won a World Series in over 100 years.
Don’t tell me to jump on HWY 55 and drive until I land in The Lake.
Don’t mention that CUBS stands for Completely Useless By September.
Don’t mention the post season chokes of 2008, 2007, 2003, 1998 and all the other ones…
Don’t remind me of their bloated, fruitless, and ever- expanding pay roll.
Don’t call me a traitor to my life-long St. Louis roots.
Don’t throw me out of Cardinal Nation.
Don’t dump a Bud Light on me.
And please don’t try to start a fight with me.
Because, even though this blog title is “I Love Those Cubs!”, I don’t really mean those Cubs from The Windy City. Hecka, no! I’m talking about “those cubs” as mentioned in the homily given by the Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan, at his installation Mass.
The church is a loving mother who has a zest for life and serves life everywhere, but she can become a protective 'mama bear' when the life of her innocent, helpless cubs is threatened. (read the whole homily here)
Yes, I love the unborn. Those cubs are pretty special, don’t you think?
I love those cubs so much because I used to be one. When I was in my mother’s womb, she and my dad chose to keep me. And though I have had my share of troubles, I love the opportunities I’ve had to live and grow on this incredible planet.
I love those cubs because I’m a dad. The times of my wife’s pregnancies are some of my most powerful memories. We did all that we could to make sure that our unborn children were safe. I still feel that sense of protection for my kids. I wish everyone felt that for all of God’s kids.
I love those cubs because some people don’t. It simply saddens me that someone would ever consider taking an innocent life to make their own life more convenient. As Mother Teresa said, “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish. …”
Because I love those cubs so much, I plan on attending the Office of Youth Ministry’s Pro-Life trip to Washington, DC in January of 2010. If you can join us, please do. If not, please pray for those of us who will be attending, and please pray for those cubs!
