World Youth Day: 2011

An amazing pilgrimage to Madrid, Spain is coming! On August 10th, 2011, the Office of Youth Ministry, specifically, Fr. Brian Fischer will be leading a group of young people to Spain for World Youth Day 2011.

If you have never been to World Youth Day, it is five days of life rooted in God’s abundant initiative of life giving love! You will receive catechesis from Bishops from around the world, experience a welcoming ceremony for the Holy Father, the living stations of the Cross, a long walk, a slumber party with about a million of your Catholic brothers and sisters(under the starry sky), and of course we will unite our souls in the Eucharist, which will be celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI!

The theme for WYD 2011 is “Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith(Col 2:7).” Christ constantly wants to draws us deeper, he always calls us to give more, to let go of our worldly distractions and to let our lives be transformed by His divine initiative of love. A pilgrimage like this can often help us to get refocused and re-connected to Christ in a less superficial and worldly way and become bold, radical, witnesses to the Catholic Church, the sign of Christ in the world!

If you feel called to join us there will be two informational meetings on March 9th, 2010 one will be at 2:00pm and the other will be at 7:00pm. The meetings will be held here at the Cardinal Rigali Center. Each meeting will cover the same material. If you register before April 1st, 2010 there will be a $100.00 early booking savings.

Please, pray about it and pray for us!

"To Whom Shall we Go?"

I have been thinking a lot about this years youth ministry retreat. Recently, while praying the Fourth Luminous mystery of the Rosary, I found myself thinking and praying very fervently for each of you and your work with teens. I didn’t realize until afterward when I had gone back to look at the Gospel passage of Mark, on the Transfiguration why I was so fixated on praying for you.
As I read Mark 9, and skimmed over the previous chapters, I was struck by the way in which the Gospel continues to come to life everyday for each of us. We live it when we live in Christ.
Before Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up the mountain for a little one on one time, there is a flurry of activity. These guys are called by Christ to do his work in the world and they do just that. The first eight chapters are a mad flurry of apostolic work. There are baptism’s, healings, teachings, worship, prayer, mercy, love, miracles, battles with Satan, missions, time with family, rejection of His divinity, five thousand are fed, more healing’s, more miracles and right before the transfiguration there is a great revelation.
In Matthew 16 Jesus gives Peter the keys to the kingdom. He entrusts all that he has revealed to Peter, giving him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. In faith, Peter confesses the divinity of Christ, let’s face it, Peter did not always know what the Lord was talking about, there were numerous times, this being one of them where he gave his blind obedience out of his deep love of Christ. But, in the next moment, Peter probably still a little swelled up with pride from his big promotion, rejects the cross. The man who has been given the keys to the kingdom is immediately punk slapped by the Lord. Jesus quickly rebukes Peter saying to him “Get behind me satan.” Who needed a retreat at that moment more than St. Peter? And when he got to the mountain, Christ, Elijah, and Moses restore and renew Peter’s faith and confidence. So much so, that Peter wants to pitch tents and live in the moment for awhile.
What does all of this have to do with our own lives? Peter is likely a confused mess after this experience and is in need of some time away from the work and the distractions. Some intimate time in which to contemplate how Christ is calling him to fully utilize his gifts. Isn’t that all of us? Running to D.C., back to the parish, life night, prayer night, XLT, and on and on and on we continue to do things for our teens. How many times do we feel like we did it just the way Christ wanted us to, only to be reminded a day later that we aren't quite there yet and need to strive to love Him more perfectly?
Perhaps, it is time that we retreat to the mountain for a time of revelation and rest in the Lord. Feb 26th-28th, join us at Kings house retreat center for this years youth ministry retreat. The theme is “To Whom Shall we Go Lord,” we will explore our faith by looking at our lives through the eyes of St. Peter. I am convinced that this will be an amazing opportunity for rest, prayer, intimacy, and restoration in the Lord for all of us. We invite you to come and pitch your tent with us for a couple of days. We look forward to seeing you, know that we are praying for you!

The Office of Youth Ministry has given this website a much-needed overhaul. Not only did we upgrade the engine running the website (instead of jogging along like a beat-up station wagon, it's roaring down the strip like a Lamborghini!), we also fixed a ton of little problems with the site and added a few new features.

Forums: You can now easily reply to other postings, and add new forum topics.

Calendar of Events: You can add your own events, and view other youth ministry events more easily.

Young Adults: This section of the site will be greatly expanded in the coming months!

OYM Picks: Fresh links from around the Internet, hand-picked by the Office of Youth Ministry.

Image Galleries: Now with 200% more win!

A fresh new look: Much easier on the eyes, better for modern computers.

What do you think? Let us know in the forums, leave a comment below, or send us an email!
World Youth Day Madrid - 2011

Greetings and Peace brothers and sisters in Christ, from the OYM,

World Youth Day Madrid 2011 isn’t as far off as you might think. The registration brochures are in and in the next week many of you will be receiving them the old fashioned way, yup, the United States Postal Service. This is going to be an amazing pilgrimage! Whether you have been on your journey toward eternity with Christ for awhile, you are just beginning it, or even if you are still searching for answers, this trip to Spain will draw each and every one of us deeper into Christ’s life giving love! We are called to be “rooted and built up in Him(Christ) and established in the faith (Col 2: 7).” This is one of those trips that will help reveal the Mystery of God and draw you into a deeper knowledge and love of His presence in your life.

It is a 14 day pilgrimage which will take us to Fatima where Our Lady appeared the children, then off to Santiago to visit the Cathedral of the Apostle St. James, and of course, mass with the Holy Father and about a million other teen and young adult Catholics from around the world. The joy and journey are guaranteed to change your life!

The pilgrimage will be open to all teens that turn sixteen before Aug. 9th of 2011 and all young adults. Pray about it and look to your parish Youth Minister, your Campus Minister, or Parish Priest for the registration information in the next week or two.

Pray for us, please!

VMY Welcoming Mass

Our September Mass is our annual Freshman Welcome!

(Evangelization: A big fancy word for being a person that invites others to become an active part of their faith journey). Here is how you can test out how well you do that; Invite any incoming freshman you know to be a part of VMY (Vincentian Marian Youth) and participate in our youth mass this Sept. 13, 6pm the Shrine Church in Perryville for our Freshman Welcome and every mass after! Following mass we will have pizza, s'mores, a bonfire, music, and lots of fun!

When? Sept. 26th the eve of the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The event begins with a 6 p.m. and concludes Sunday morning. No food, drinks, or alternative shelter provided--you may want to bring food and drink with you but be prepared to share with your homeless neighbors! Come ready to share a bonfire and good music with others longing to experience the feel of life without a home.

SVDP 2009 National Meething Youth Track

All for One...Dignity Through Service

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's 2009 National Meeting is coming to St. Louis and this year they have made a number of special events for Youth and Young Adults called the YOUTH TRACK. The Youth Track includes events Thursday evening (meet Eduardo from Bella and watch the movie), Friday evening (Adorations and Praise + Worship with Adam Bitter), and All day Saturday (Hear Immaculee Libagiza and much more)!

For more information and to register, email ryanc@svdpstl.org (also ask your youth minister about it to see if your group is going). The cost is $100.00 or if you don't have the cash, you can bring in 5 video games or a prom dress. Buses will be available to people that would like or need rides downtown. Buses are already set up to depart/return to three locations: CBC, Vianney, and Barat Academy. Bus times are 6pm Thursday and Friday, and 9am on Saturday. They are asking a $5 donation for each kid per each roundtrip. We will collect video games and prom dresses in the school departure parking lots and give the kids their registration badges right there. Thus, they can walk right into the hotel and right into the event. The movie star, Eduardo Verastegui and movie producer Leo Severino are eager to present to them!

Click on the attachement below for complete schedule, speaker information, and much more!

LEARN HOW to PUT YOUR FAITH into ACTION!

To Infinity and Beyond... um, Madrid, that is...

Planning for World Youth Day (WYD) 2011 is in full swing! The theme is, “Rooted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith!” (Col 2:7). The actual dates for WYD is August 15-21, all centered in Madrid - but we have so much more than that to offer! Our trip begins August 9th.

Our pilgrimage will begin in Lisbon, Portugal where we travel a bit to visit the sight where Our Blessed Mother appeared, and the sun danced in the sky - in Fatima. We will participate in all the celebrations and festivities of that awesome religious sight.

From Fatima, we will travel North along the coast to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where the tradition of Christian Pilgrimage began. After a mini-retreat, we begin our journey South to Madrid, stopping along the way in Avila (home of St. Teresa of Avila).

In Madrid, we will join with youth from all over the world, as we celebrate our great faith with our Holy Father. We are so excited to offer not just a trip, but a spiritual pilgrimage with the saints – which allows us to enrich our World Youth Day experience – and enables us to be, “Rooted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith!”

We will be having pricing and itineraries soon! For more info, please call: 314.633.2508 or Email: brianfischer@archstl.org

Steubenville St. Louis 2010 to GROW, GROW, GROW

We seemed to be very content to sell out the two Steubenville conferences in short order. But we weren't. We are very concerned about the 1700+ participants who were on our waiting list. So, with prayer and lots of discussion we have made the decision to leap - to a new venue for the conference. It was not a big leap, but in a way it is! We are staying at Missouri State University, but moving down the street to the newly constructed JQH Arena. SOOOOO, in 2010 we will be using the JQH Arena for the main programing for Steubenville St. Louis Mid America. This slight move down the street will allow 1000 more participants per weekend. Although the arena will seat many more than what we need, we feel secure that we will be able to keep the initimate feeling with only lower bowl seating.

If you are interested in receiving promotional material for 2010 please contact stllyouth@archstl.org to be put on the mailing list. Promotional material for 2010 will be sent out in November 2009.
