Youth Mental Health First Aid

  • One in five youth ages 13 to 18 lives with a mental health condition. That means in a class of 25, five students are impacted. – National Alliance for Mental Illness
  • 1% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment. – Mental Health America
  • 13% of youth report having a substance use or alcohol problem. – Mental Health America

That is why it is so important for all adults working with teens to take Youth Mental Health First Aid, a training that teaches participants how to help adolescents experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. Having more informed Youth Ministers can dramatically help early intervention efforts and get youth the help they need when they need it.

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth. This 6-hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents (ages 6-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

This day long training covers

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness in this age group, including Anxiety, Depression, Eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis
  • How to connect the person with help

Susan Cunningham, Office of Catholic Education and Formation Region Director, Safety Committee Member for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor, is bringing this training to us!
